“When I’m photographing a family or any subject, I try to get authenticity and intimacy. I don’t really do sea grass and prom poses. I capture people at play.”
Ann Dinwiddie Madden’s photography has been described as unexpected, interesting, thoughtful, and stylish. And there’s something else. Ah yes, a dash of rebellion.
Must be flashbacks from when Ann applied to art school on a dare to herself. When Maryland Institute College of Art actually accepted her, she had to go. Thousands of “love hours” later, Ann launched her graphic design business, Avalon Announcements. In between naps and nursing, Ann produced invitations in that fun, hip, urban style that has become her signature. Today she runs a growing business that incorporates both her graphic design work as well as her photography.
Her photographs have been shown at the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, CO, Mr. Henry’s in Washington DC (the same place Roberta Flack launched her singing career), the Creative Edge Show at the Mockingbird Cafe in Bay St. Louis, MS, multiple juried shows at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA at The Gail Keenan Center at Coast Episcopal School in Long Beach, MS and at Slow Exposures 2013 in Pike County, GA, where she was awarded Third Place for “First Position.”
Born and raised in New Orleans, Ann has studied in Paris, DC, and New York City. She now spends her time behind the camera on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. When not on location, she loved living in a modern Mayberry with her husband and two daughters where she dodges hurricanes and has play dates with other artists and kids. Every day she is inspired by the many faces of the wetlands, including (you guessed it) sea grass.
