About Chatham Meade

Chatham Meade is an Instructor of Art at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, MS, and is the director and curator of the Lucile Parker Gallery of Art. She received an MFA in painting from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, in 2007 and completed an undergraduate degree in art and English at The University of Southern Mississippi. She has also completed Master's degree course work in poetry writing. The paintings of Chatham Meade are a celebration of her love of working with color and the physical process of paint. Her paintings walk the line between referencing the natural world (plant forms, weather, the seasons, and different types of light) and being concrete forms where she is simply trying to organize and harness the expressive power of color, shape, light, transparencies, rhythms, patterns, and marks to make a place of play in paint that she is continually altering and changing and from which she is learning. Paintings by Chatham Meade are like a long walk in a garden where one is overwhelmed by the feeling of light and color, dazzled by a flowing and rhythmic environment and where the eye floats from flower to flower, but it is the overall impact of the experience that one remembers. Chatham is also a poet and working with color relationships as concrete elements is a way for her to create a situation of visual poetry in paint. Chatham Meade is interested in showing her paintings around the state of Mississippi as well as giving artist talks, judging shows, and participating in other visual art and community events.
