GLENNRAY TUTOR

About GLENNRAY TUTOR

Glennray Tutor (born 1950 in Kennett, Missouri. MFA-University of Mississippi) is an American painter living in Oxford, Mississippi. His painting technique consists of oil paint applied with brushes to prepared canvas or paper in the "Old Masters" manner of Vermeer and other Dutch classicists. He is considered to be part of the Photorealism art movement and the new Hyper-realism movement. His color and detail imbued subject matter consists of commonplace artifacts of daily life, such as glass jars, cola bottles, marbles, comic books and fireworks. Glennray Tutor is credited as being the first artist to merge Pop Art with metaphor. In a 1986 essay, author Barry Hannah described Tutor’s art as Deep Pop. Tutor, interviewed, has said, “My paintings consist of contemporary subjects used metaphorically. In my work I’m exploring various visual qualities of objects, as well as orchestrating ideas that I find alluring, such as: communication and relationship, time, narrative, childhood and adulthood, cosmic and quantum physics. My painting compositions are an interplay of the visual, emotional and intellectual.” Glennray Tutor’s work is in private, corporate and museum collections throughout the world. These include The Morris Museum of Art, The Seymour Lawrence Collection of American Art, Nike Inc., The Mississippi Museum of Art, FedEx, NBC Network, Universal Studios Hollywood, and The Howard Tullman Collection of Art. His artwork has appeared in and on numerous books, record albums and magazines (such as Juxtapoz, Art News, Poets and Artists, and Luxury Home, Fan The Fire Magazine, Big Mag and Artists and illustrators). His work has been featured in many Television programs (such as Seinfeld), major films (such as The Blind Side), and an increasing number of Blogs (such as Booooooom.com, Supersonic Electronic.com, BoingBoing.com, Drawn.com, Arrested Motion.com, Acuity Designs.com and Wall Magazine). In 1999 and 2000 his art was included in the prestigious exhibition OUTWARD BOUND: American Art on the Brink of the Twenty-First Century, sponsored by Mobil Corporation. Venues for the exhibition included The Meridian International Center, Washington DC; The Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi, Vietnam; The Working People’s Cultural Palace, Beijing, China; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Manila, Republic of the Philippines; and The Singapore Museum of Art, Singapore. Among the other artists in the exhibition were Robert Rauschenberg, Jacob Lawrence, Red Grooms, Janet Fish, Ralph Goings, Jim Dine, Bill Dunlap, Andy Warhol and Chuck Close.
