About Nathan Mullins

Nathan Mullins was born and raised in Clarksdale, MS. He has received his BFA in Painting & Drawing from the University of Southern Mississippi and will graduate with an MFA in Studio Art from American University in Washington, DC in May 2015. In addition, Mullins has studied abroad in Rome and Florence with the University of Georgia and in Berlin at the GlogauAIR Studios.

Mullins’s work is driven by issues concerning the intersection of formal decisions and subject matter. Making use of symbols gleaned from sources such as Greek mythology, comic books, and American literature, his paintings and drawings often suggest familiar yet elusive narratives. This open ended quality of content in the works allows the artist’s use of color and mark-making to be more apparent. From here, questions of material and surface begin to arise. These are the moments that Mullins searches for in the studio: the instances of working with a painting or drawing instead of against it, and the ability to leave it when those instances are expended.
