Sheri I. Hoem, Artist Bio

Sheri Hoem is a painter, photographer and mixed media artist who lives in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Raised in Wyoming, her first career was as a professional photographer, when she served as the staff photographer for the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody. She later earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English at the University of Wyoming, then her Ph.D. in the prestigious literary studies program at the State University of New York at Buffalo. She taught for nine years at Xavier University in New Orleans, serving as a tenured associate professor of English. She later taught literature and cultural studies at the University of Idaho, Ithaca College and the University of Southern Mississippi. All the while, she pursued her artistic interests. Her paintings are highly influenced by her other endeavors as she attempts to translate her investigations of photography and critical theory into acrylic painting and mixed media images.

Hoem is a member of the South Mississippi Art Association and Hattiesburg Arts Council. Her work has won awards consistently in local juried art exhibitions. Recent awards include First Place in Mixed Media at the annual juried art show of SMAA in December of 2014. Also in 2014 she won first place in Acrylic at the Exhibit of Watercolor, Oil and Acrylic Paintings sponsored by SMAA and William Carey College. She has also won awards in juried exhibitions in photography, and she had a solo exhibition at City Hall in Hattiesburg, sponsored by the Hattiesburg Arts Council in October-November, 2014, titled “Russia Behind the Wall: A Collection of Photographs of the Soviet Union Under Communism. “
