I was born with Lupus and a daughter of a Memphis Musician- cousin to NY philharmonic musical director Alan Gilbert. My childhood dream was to move to Ocean Springs and become an artist and writer. Here I am at age 60 post stroke living my dream. I have always been artistic in some form. It wasn’t until my mid fifties I began painting and sketching. I have made paper flowers since the 60’s and would escape the world of violence and protests if the time with making color peace posters and large colorful tissue paper flowers to decorate my room. It was a way of both beautifying my world and escaping reality. Isn’t that what the arts does for us though? Speak to our hearts and our spirits- and takes us away for a moment and gives us pleasure and an escape? I do all sorts of art- whatever speaks to me that day in that moment. I like my art to be whimsical and fun! I do not usually paint from photographs but from a collage of things I have seen or dreamed. Recently I have started taking artistic photographs of things I believe are so beautiful they must be shared. My jewelry pieces also many times reflects messages- especially my necklaces and my leather cuffs. My leather cuffs are meant to be customized particular the banded cuffs adding jewelry from a deceased loved one making the cuff a memory cuff from the costume jewelry many would consider “junk” I can make it into something treasured. That gives me lots of pleasure. As far as I know I am the only artist doing this is the country.
